Karl von Koseritz
1832–90
German-Brazilian journalist, politician, and ethnographer. Studied law briefly at Heidelberg, but wanted to travel, so signed on as a sailor, but left upon reaching Brazil, where he joined the army as an artilleryman, 1851–2. Taught at a high school in Pelotas until 1857 and began writing for various local papers as well as starting his own papers in both Portuguese and German. Editor, Deutsche Zeitung, 1864. From 1874, published the annual Deutschen Volkskalender für Brasilien, which described German immigrant life. Played a key role in the movement to integrate the German minority into Brazilian national life.
