German botanist. PhD, Breslau (Wrocław), 1866. Privat-dozent and keeper of the herbarium, Munich, 1871–8. Professor of botany, Kiel, 1878; Breslau, 1884; Berlin, 1889. Founder of the journal Botanische Jahrbücher, 1880. Worked on taxonomy; a pioneer of phytogeography.
