Johann Ernst Oswald (Oswald) Schmiedeberg

1838–1921

German pharmacologist. MD, Dorpat (Tartu), 1866; assistant, Pharmacological Institute, 1866–8; professor of pharmacology, dietetics, and history of medicine, 1871. Professor of pharmacology and director of the Pharmacological Institute, Straßburg (Strasbourg), 1872. Known for his study of the formation of hippuric acid in the kidney.
