Wilhelm Kobelt

1840–1916

German physician and zoologist. Studied medicine at the University of Giessen, 1857–62. Physician in Biedenkopf an der Lahn, 1862–9; medical examiner, Schwanheim, near Frankfurt am Main, 1869–80. In 1880, left medicine to focus on zoology, particularly malacology, and his social and political interests. Worked on the classification and zoogeography of molluscs. Co-founder of the Deutsche Malakozoologische Gesellschaft (German Malacological Society); set up the Nachrichtenblatt der Deutschen Malakazoologische Gesellschaft (later the Archiv für Molluskenkunde). Awarded an honorary doctorate, Königsberg, 1894.
