Colin Campbell

1853–95

Politician and barrister. Fifth son of George Douglas Campbell, eighth duke of Argyll. Educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. MP for Argyllshire, 1878–85. Called to the bar, 1886. Married Gertrude Elizabeth Blood in 1881; following judicial separation in 1883, both parties filed for divorce (Campbell accused his wife of adultery, she accused him of cruelty and knowingly infecting her with syphilis), but it was not granted. Practised as a barrister in Bombay, 1888–95. Died in Bombay as a result of venereal disease.
