John Gisborne

1770–1851

Poet. BA, Cambridge, 1792. Married Millicent Pole, daughter of Edward Sacheverel Pole and stepdaughter of Erasmus Darwin (1731–1802), in 1792. His poetry was admired by William Wordsworth. Devout and modest, he was known as ‘the man of prayer’. Author of The vales of Wever (1797) and Reflections (1818–35).
