Jöns Jacob Berzelius
1779–1848
Swedish chemist. Studied medicine at Uppsala University. Professor, Stockholm School of Surgery (Karolinska Institute from 1810), 1807–32. Developed systems of atomic weights and chemical notation and discovered several chemical elements. Did important work on the distinction between organic and inorganic componds, and in electrochemistry.
