Chemist. Studied at Royal College of Chemistry, 1851. BA, Oxford, 1860. Professor of chemistry, Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, 1863. Professor of chemistry at the Royal Academy of Arts, 1879. Wrote on the chemistry of paints and painting. Prepared several botanical paintings for the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. FRS 1888.
