Colonial administrator. Captain in the Royal Engineers, 1881. Governor of Lagos, 1897–9; Newfoundland, 1898–1901; Natal, 1901–7; Ceylon (Sri Lanka), 1907–13. Married Blanche Lily Julia Johnson in 1874.
