Robert Bellamy Clifton
1836–1921
Physicist. Educated at University College, London, and St John’s College, Cambridge. First professor of natural philosophy at Owens College, Manchester, 1860–66; first professor of experimental philosophy, Oxford, 1866–1915. Founded the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford, 1872. President of the Physical Society, 1882–4; vice-president of the Royal Society, 1896–8. FRS 1868.
