William Henry Blackmore
1827–78
Solicitor and philanthropist. Practised business and maritime law in Liverpool and opened a finance office in London. Negotiated land purchases in Colorado and New Mexico and backed the United States Freehold Land and Emigration Company, which brought settlers to Colorado. Founded the Blackmore Museum in Salisbury, Wiltshire, to house a collection of ethnographic relics from the Mississippi and Ohio Valley mound culture, 1867. Funded a geological survey of north-western Wyoming in 1871. Collected over 1200 photographs of Native Americans to replace exhibits lost in a fire at the Smithsonian Institution in 1865. Co-authored a book on the first peoples of the North American desert, The hunting grounds of the great west.
