Jean François Marie de Surville
1717–70
French navigator and trader. Worked for the French India Company and served in the French Navy in the 1740s and 1750s. Began a series of trading ventures in Indian waters in 1766. Made a voyage of exploration and trade to the central Pacific aboard the Saint Jean Baptiste, 1769–70. Died at sea.
