Charles Staniland Wake
1835–1910
Anthropologist and solicitor. Solicitor in London and Hull from 1858; emigrated to America in the early 1890s. Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and pioneer of evolutionary social anthropology; published The evolution of morality (1878), and wrote on serpent worship and on marriage and kinship.
