James Busby
1802–71
Scottish-born viticulturalist and civil servant. Son of John Busby. Studied viticulture in France. Emigrated with his parents to New South Wales in 1824. Superintendent at the Males Orphan School near Liverpool, 1825–7. Collector of internal revenue, 1827–9. Toured vineyards in France and Spain in 1831. British resident in New Zealand, 1833–40. Represented the Bay of Islands in the Auckland Provincial Council, 1853–5 and 1857–63. Published on viticulture.
