William Westbrooke Burton
1794–1888
Judge. Entered the navy as a midshipman in 1807. Served in the Mediterranean, East and West Indies, China, and New Orleans. Called to the bar, 1824. Recorder of Daventry, 1826–7. Accepted a seat on the bench of the newly constituted Supreme Court at the Cape of Good Hope in 1827; at New South Wales in 1832. Puisne judge, Madras, 1844–57. Member of the Australian Legislative Council, 1857; president, 1858–61. Retired to England in 1861. Knighted, 1844.
