Russian-born German botanist. MD, Dorpat (Tartu), 1825. Collected plants in North China and Altai, Russia. Professor extraordinarius of botany, University of Kazan’ (Tartarstan), 1833. Professor of botany and director of the botanic gardens, Dorpat, 1836–67.
