John Tanner
c. 1780 – c. 1846
American interpreter and author. Son of John Tanner, a preacher who settled with his family in Kentucky in the 1780s. Captured at the age of 9 by two Ojibwa men, and adopted by Net-no-kwa, a female chief of the Ottawas. Lived with Ojibwa and other Indian peoples in the Great Lakes and Red River regions, 1790 – circa 1820. Interpreter at Makinac, 1825 or 1826, and later at Saute Ste Marie. Published an autobiography in 1830. Disappeared in 1846.
