Charles Upham Shepard
1804–86
American mineralogist. BA, Amherst, 1824. Lecturer in botany, Yale, 1831–2; in natural history, 1833–47. Professor of chemistry, South Carolina Medical College, 1835–61; 1865–9. Professor of chemistry and natural history, Amherst College 1854–77. Built up a large mineral collection, which he bequeathed to Amherst College, and wrote a textbook on mineralogy.
