Karl Friedrich Schimper

1803–67

German natural historian. Studied theology and medicine in Heidelberg, 1822–7; Munich, 1827–9. Unable to find a regular academic post, he eventually settled in Schwetzingen in 1849. Worked in botany on phyllotaxy, in geology and meteorology on the concept of ice ages, and was a pioneer in palaeoclimatology.
