French physiologist and politician. Studied law and medicine at Paris. Professor of zoology and physiology, Faculté des sciences, Bordeaux, 1866–7; of comparative zoology, Muséum d’histoire naturelle, Paris, 1868; of physiology, the Sorbonne, 1869. Entered politics in 1870. Member of the Académie des sciences, 1881.
