German anatomist. Studied medicine at the University of Dorpat (now Tartu), 1849–54; professor extraordinarius, 1858. Professor, histology and anatomy, University of Kiel, 1867; vice-chancellor, 1872–4. Taught anatomy, comparative anatomy, and history of evolution in Königsberg (Kaliningred), 1876–80. Professor, University of Munich, 1880–1901; vice-chancellor, 1896–7. Co-founder of the comparative history of evolution.
