German physicist. Studied physics and mathematics at Leipzig and Berlin, 1859–64; received a doctorate in 1864. Privat-dozent, Berlin, 1867. Professor of physics, Zurich polytechnic, 1868; Würzburg, 1870; Strasbourg 1872. Professor of experimental physics, Berlin, 1888–94.
