Jules Barthélemy-Saint-Hilaire
1805–95
French academic, writer, and politician. Wrote for journals including Revue des deux mondes; founding editor of Le bon sens. Imprisoned in 1830 after signing the "protestation" of the journalists. Professor of Greek and Latin, Collège de France, 1837; translated the works of Aristotle. Member of the provisional government, 1848–51. Elected to represent Seine-et-Oise, 1869; voted against the declaration of war on Prussia, 1870; one of the peace negotiators, and instrumental in bringing Louis Adolphe Thiers to power in 1871. Elected senator for life by the National Assembly, 1875.
