Charles William Maxwell (Charles) Heddle
1811/12–99
Senegal-born merchant. Born in Senegal of a Scottish father and Senegalese mother. Educated in Scotland. Worked for the London firm Forster and Smith, importers and exporters for west Africa. Returned to west Africa in 1834; set up as an import and export trader in Freetown, Sierra Leone, in 1838. Appointed member of the governor’s council (later the legislative council), 1845. Retired to France in 1871. One of the richest traders in west Africa.
