John Hawkshaw

Civil engineer. In charge of the Bolivar Mining Association’s mines in Venezuela, 1832–4. Engineer to the Manchester and Leeds Railway, 1845–88. Practised as a consulting engineer in London from 1850; from 1870 in partnership with his son Clarke and with Harrison Hayter. One of the foremost civil engineers of the nineteenth century. Knighted, 1873. FRS 1855.
