Frederick Orpen Bower
1855–1948
Botanist. Graduated first class in the natural science tripos, Cambridge, 1877. Studied with Julius Sachs in Würzburg, 1877, and with Anton de Bary in Strasbourg, 1879. Assistant to Daniel Oliver at University College, London, 1880; lecturer in T. H. Huxley’s department at South Kensington, 1882. Professor of botany at Glasgow, 1885–1925. FRS 1891.
