Army and political officer in India. Commissioned second-lieutenant, Bengal Engineers, 1828; worked in the North-Western Provinces, 1832–9; engineer in Afghanistan, 1839. Aide-de-camp and private secretary to governor-general of India, 1842. Captain, 1843. Commissioner to Tenasserim, Burma, 1844; recalled in 1847. Fought in the second Anglo-Sikh war, 1848; Sepoy mutiny, 1857. Member of the Council of India, 1859; Indian foreign secretary, 1861–5; military member of the governor-general’s council, 1865–70. Lieutenant-governor of the Punjab, 1870.
