Caspar Friedrich Wolff
1734–94
German embryologist. Field doctor in the Prussian army, 1761, and lecturer in anatomy at the Breslau Military Hospital. Became academician in anatomy at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences, 1766. Successfully refuted the theory of preformation.
