Politician. MP for Whitchurch, 1826–31. Captain, West Kent Militia, 1827; West Kent Yeomanry, 1830. Succeeded to earldom in 1831. Lord lieutenant of Kent, 1856–90. His principal residence, Frognal, Foots Cray, was about five miles from Down.
