John Strong Newberry

1822–92

American physician, geologist, and stratigrapher. Appointed professor of geology, Columbia University (now George Washington University), 1856. Participated in the Colorado River expedition, 1857–8. During the Civil War, served with the United States Sanitary Commission. Professor of geology and palaeontology, School of Mines of Columbia University, New York, 1866–92. State geologist of Ohio, 1869–74.
