Charles Robert Leslie
1794–1859
Painter. Born in London of American parents. Taken to America in 1800 where he was educated and began to show a decided talent for drawing. As his family could not afford to pay for his training as an artist he became apprenticed to a Philadelphia publishers in 1808. A subscription having been raised on his behalf, he travelled to England in 1811 to become a student of the Royal Academy. He remained in England as a painter for the rest of his life.
