John Laird
1805–74
Shipbuilder. Partner in the family shipbuilding firm of Laird Brothers in Birkenhead. Pioneered the construction of iron vessels. Liberal-conservative MP for Birkenhead, 1861–74. Deputy lieutenant and justice of the peace for the county of Chester. Member of the Mersey docks and harbour board. Chairman of the Birkenhead improvement commission.
