James Phillips Kay-Shuttleworth, 1st baronet
1804–77
Physician, social reformer, and educationalist. A founder of the Ardwick and Ancoats Dispensary in Manchester, 1828. Investigated the relationship between poverty and the physical and moral condition of the poor. First secretary of the committee of the council on education, 1839–49. An advocate of social science. Created baronet, 1849.
