Antoine Laurent de Jussieu
1748–1836
French botanist. Appointed deputy to the professor of botany at the Jardin du roi, Paris, 1770. Studied plant taxonomy. Published his Genera plantarum in 1789. Promoted the ‘natural system’ of classification. After the founding of the Muséum d’histoire naturelle in 1793, became professor of botany; director, 1802–26.
