Antiquary and diplomat. Secretary to Lord Elgin, 1799–1809; supervised the transfer of Grecian antiquities to the British Museum in 1802. Under-secretary for foreign affairs, 1809–22. Published a translation of the Rosetta Stone inscriptions. One of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society, 1833.
