German botanist. Worked as a chemist before going in 1853 to Paris, where he became Pierre Vilmorin’s botanical assistant. Member of the Société botanique de France, 1854. Published several papers on lichens and argued for the hybrid origin of plants such as wheat. Left Paris in 1871, after the Franco-Prussian War. Worked at the Agricultural and Agricultural Chemistry Research Station at Dahme, 1872–91.
