William Fairbairn, 1st baronet
1789–1874
Scottish engineer and shipbuilder. Associate of George Stevenson, with whom he patented a new method for the manufacture of wrought-iron girders. President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1854; of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, 1861. Created baronet, 1869. FRS 1850.
