William Sumner Appleton
1840–1903
American antiquary and numismatist. Half-brother of Thomas Gold Appleton. Founding member of the Boston Numismatic Society. Appointed to the commission to attend the assay of the United States Mint, 1867. Commissioner of Boston records, 1875–92. Established the arms and seal of Harvard University in 1885.
